2.  WIPO helps Gambians who embraced Islam  
[By International Islamic News Agency(IINA)]Banjul, Gambia, Shawwal 21//Jan 5,2002 (IINA) – One hundred Gambian nationals have embraced Islam in the hands of Libya-based World Islamic Propagation Organization (WIPO), at a ceremony that was attended by Daawa activists, Imams and other Gambian Muslim personalities.

The secretary-general of WIPO made an inspection tour of the educational and other institutions that are sponsored by the organization.

Two new mosques were also opened in the outskirts of the capital, Banjul.

In Surinam, WIPO organized training courses in the Arabic language for Muslim students.

Islam is the majority religion of The Gambia, with around 90% of the population being Muslims. However, some popular religions practices diverge from mainstream Islam, with a system of marabout societies being very common. There is no Shi'ite following in the country. Gambia became a Muslim state largely because of the efforts of 19th century Muslim proselytizers and the peaceful period during British colonization. The Muslim sense of tolerance in Gambia is largely the work of present leadership, which decided to build on the colonial legacy of religious pluralism

Islam is not only the leading religion in the Senegambia region, but also one of the world’s leading religions. The religion was founded by the Prophet Mohammed in Saudi Arabia. Today the followers of Islam number hundreds of millions and are to be found in all parts of the world.

Muslims form the bulk of the population in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and certain areas of the Far East. Many countries in East, Central and West Africa, including The Gambia and Senegal, have predominantly Muslim populations. The Prophet Mohammed, who founded the religion of Islam, was born in about AD 571 in Mecca and belonged to the Quarish tribe. Islam traces its founder’s descent to Ismail and Abraham.
