Police in the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam, used teargas, batons and police dogs to break up a demonstration by Muslims.

Nearly one-hundred people including twenty-one women are reported to have been arrested.

Police entered a mosque to pursue protesters who had fled there.

The protest was organized by the Committee for the Defense of Muslim Rights to press for female students to be allowed to wear headscarves and trousers.

The demonstrators also want Friday made a half-day for Muslim workers.

Tanzania is a secular country, but almost half the population is Muslim.
