Brazil: New Mosque

IINA – 02

Luwanda, Brazil, Safar 7/Apr 20,2002 (IINA) – Luwanda is situated in the Brazilian Province of Parana, and the Muslim population here consists of ethnic Lebanese who had immigrated to this place over forty years ago. After the government had decided to build a university in this area, the Muslims, headed by Abdul Rahim Farhat, decided that a mosque should also be built. Among those who have visited the area for this purpose are the representative of the Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL), Sheikh Muhammad Qassim Al-Ruheidy, and a delegate from the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Mahairy, who have since been following up the various stages of the implementation of the project. The complex would also include an Islamic center and a meeting hall for the Muslim community in this part of Brazil.
